Gordon Bennet!

Don't you have safety at work legislation, or at least fire regs to prevent that kind of thing?

Nothing much prevents wires from getting 80 years old and inspections don't rip out wall or ceiling plaster very often, it seems... It still shouldn't have gone so long.

taniwha says:

A piece of string is barred from entering a pub. All string is banned you see. So, he decides to clevely tie himself into knots - one knot at the top to represent a head, another in the middle for a stomach, clever twists here and there to make arms and legs. At the very end of the string past the knot-head, he splays the string into individual threads to make hair.

He then goes back into the pub. The barman eyes him suspiciously and says "hang on, you're not a piece of string are you?"
The string says "no! I'm afraid not!"
(frayed knot! geddit!?)
