A new beginning, an adventure beheld for two, promised to one another for so long. To travel Oz, two like minds as one, seeing and sharing as two, complimenting our combined skills of observation and love of the land.

While visiting Geraldton on the W.A. Coast I had to visit , admire and pay my respects to this memorial for the 645 sailors who lost their lives on the HMAS Sydney 11.

The 'Dome of Souls' is the heartfelt centrepiece. Inspired by an incident that took place at the Dedication of the Memorial on 19th November 1998.
A flock of seagulls swooped over the assembled crowd at the setting of the sun while the notes of the Last Post played over the Indian Ocean that evening. These birds, symbolic of departed souls historically . The souls of drowned sailors were believed to be embodied in seagulls.
This steel dome forms a canopy of the 645 silver gulls representing the crew of the HMAS Sydney 11.
Not only creating a sacred space for remembrance , to stand beneath it, and its shadows thrown, I felt a sense of movement and freedom, at the same time evoking a feeling of extreme emptiness that must have been left behind by these brave, but missing crewmen.

HMAS Sydney 11, crippled by attack from the German Raider HSK 'Kormoran' was last seen as a distant glare upon the ocean when all trace of her disappeared on the 19th November 1941.

She was rediscovered 128 miles off the coast of Geraldton on the 16th March 2008.
